Octavia Spencer and Jeffrey Wright are set to star in Chinonye Chukwu’s film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. Wright will play the legendary role of Willy Loman, while Spencer will portray his wife, Linda Loman. Chukwu will co-write the screenplay with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, best known for Angels in America.

The 1949 Pulitzer Prize-winning two-act play first premiered on Broadway in February 1949 and ran for 742 performances. The synopsis of the play reads: “Death of a Salesman follows aging traveling salesman Willy Loman, who tries to repair his relationship with the family he often neglected while putting work first.”

According to a press release, the play, which won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play, “focuses on themes of infidelity, truth, and the American Dream.” Over the years, it has been adapted for television, with actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Warren Mitchell, and Brian Dennehy portraying Willy Loman. The 1951 film adaptation was nominated for five Academy Awards, further establishing the work’s enduring prominence.

With predicted stellar performances from Spencer and Wright, under the guidance of Sundance winner Chukwu, historic wins and cinematic excellence are definitely guaranteed. The film’s producers include Cindy Tolan, Kristie Macosko Krieger (via Amblin Entertainment), and Spencer (via Orit Entertainment). Kushner will also serve as a producer.
