Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming documentary series titled "LADIES FIRST: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop," which is set to honor hip-hop's 50th anniversary.
The four-episode series aims to recontextualize the significant role that women have played in the hip-hop genre over the past 50 years. It puts these women at the center of the narrative, acknowledging their contributions from the genre's inception to the present day. The documentary features interviews and insights from iconic figures such as MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Rah Digga, as well as current chart-toppers like Latto and Tierra Whack, and contemporary superstars like Saweetie and Coi Leray. It also includes perspectives from record label executives, stylists, journalists, and other important figures in the hip-hop industry.
The series, executive produced by dream hampton, Troy Carter, Raeshem Nijhon, Carri Twigg, MC Lyte, Nicole Galovski, Justin Simien, and Jennifer Ryan, contextualizes the history of hip-hop music within broader social, racial, and political landscapes, with a particular focus on the female perspective.
"LADIES FIRST: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" is set to premiere on Netflix on August 9. Viewers can expect a comprehensive and inclusive look at the influential and trailblazing women who have shaped the hip-hop genre throughout its history.
