This year’s American Music Awards was a win for Black creatives in the music industry, as many of them were honored and took home several awards in some of the most coveted categories. Artists like SZA won two awards: Favorite Female R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Song for “Saturn.” Beyoncé also secured two awards—Favorite Female Country Artist and Favorite Country Album for Cowboy Carter—continuing her winning streak from the Grammys. South African artist Tyla earned the title of Best Afrobeats Artist, while Doechii’s “Anxiety” won the inaugural Social Song of the Year award. Rappers like Megan Thee Stallion and Kendrick Lamar were not left out, winning Favorite Female Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Hip-Hop Song, respectively. The Weeknd also claimed two awards: Favorite Male R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Album for Hurry Up Tomorrow.
A major highlight of the night was the show-stopping performance by Janet Jackson, which featured a masterful rendition of songs like “Someone to Call My Lover” (including a mashup with Mariah Carey’s “Shake It Off”). She concluded her performance with “All for You.” That same night, Jackson was honored with the Icon Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music and her artistic brilliance over the years.
In her acceptance speech, she stated that she didn’t consider herself an icon, emphasizing that she and her family had always loved music and singing, and that their fame came as a result of hard work and dedication. She also said, “The one thing that I hope for is that I have been an inspiration to others and to artists to follow their dreams and succeed.”
Other winners include Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, Eminem, and Lady Gaga. You can see the full list of winners here.
