Super Falcons Triumph in WAFCON Final
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have once again cemented their dominance in African women’s football, delivering a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The win at Stade Olympique marks Nigeria’s 10th continental title, extending their unrivaled record on the continent.
Morocco seemed destined to lift their first WAFCON crown when they raced to a 2–0 lead in front of a roaring home crowd. Goals from Gizhlane Chebbak (12') and Sanaâ Mssoudy (24') stunned the Falcons, who struggled to find rhythm in the opening half (CAF).
But the Nigerians came out of the break with renewed fire. Esther Okoronkwo sparked the comeback in the 49th minute, converting a VAR-awarded penalty to cut the deficit to 2–1. From there, the momentum shifted entirely.
Folashade Ijamilusi leveled the score with a stunning 71st-minute strike, and with extra time looming, Jennifer Echegini scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, sending the Nigerian bench and traveling fans into absolute delirium.
The Falcons’ blend of resilience and experience proved unstoppable. Tournament standout Rasheedat Ajibade was named Best Player of the Tournament, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, whose crucial saves kept Nigeria alive early on, took home Best Goalkeeper honors.
“We believed until the end,” Ajibade said post-match. “The Super Falcons have always been about heart and heritage. Tonight, we showed the world again who we are.”
This win extends Nigeria’s astonishing record. 10 titles in 13 WAFCON editions, a level of dominance unmatched in African football history.
Head coach Randy Waldrum praised his team’s mentality:
“We were down, but never out. This victory wasn’t just about tactics; it was about belief. These women are champions in every sense of the word.”
With the WAFCON trophy secured, the Super Falcons have their eyes on global competition. This latest title reaffirms Nigeria’s status as Africa’s standard-bearer on the world stage, and sends a message to rivals ahead of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
For now, the team and their millions of fans at home will revel in a comeback for the ages, a reminder that the Super Falcons’ spirit is as unbreakable as ever.
