Award-winning actor Idris Elba and King Charles are teaming up for a new Netflix documentary exploring the impact of the monarch’s charity, the King’s Trust, in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Elba, a beneficiary of the organisation, will appear alongside the King in the documentary as they reflect on his contributions to the Trust over the past five decades. The documentary will also highlight the stories of young people who have benefited from the charity.
The documentary, which begins filming next week, is scheduled to be released on Netflix in 2026. It will be produced by 22 Summers, a production company founded by Elba and Diene Petterle. The show’s executive producers are Jonathan Smith and Eva Omaghomi, while Clare Bradbury will serve as showrunner and Ashley Francis-Roy will direct.
Speaking about the documentary, Elba stated, “The King’s Trust gave me an opportunity that changed my life. At a time when I didn’t have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support – including financial help – that helped me take those first steps to advance my career.”
While discussing Idris’s creative input on the project, Jonathan Townsend, the U.K. Chief Executive of the King’s Trust, said, “As a long-term supporter and former beneficiary of The Trust himself, Idris will undoubtedly bring a unique perspective to this groundbreaking documentary as he peels back the layers of our story and shows how our life-changing work is as relevant today as it has ever been.”
Described as a documentary that will show “why the work of The King’s Trust remains important and shine a light on what is possible,” the soon-to-be-released project will trace the journey of the charity, explore the motivations behind its founding, and highlight how it has impacted the lives of countless people around the world.
