Film director Gina Prince-Bythewood recently announced the completion of filming for the highly anticipated adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s best-selling novel, Children of Blood and Bone. The Woman King director shared in an Instagram post that filming took place over 74 days across two countries and two islands. She further said, “That is a wrap on production. A passionate and dedicated crew and an extraordinary cast who gave everything. And the journey has just begun.” The official release date of the film has not yet been announced, but it is speculated to be released in cinemas on January 15 2027, in IMAX.

As anticipation for the film heightens, many cinephiles and book lovers are already sharing their excitement to see the cast embody their favourite characters from the book. South African actress Thuso Mbedu plays the protagonist, Zélie; Tosin Cole, popularly known for his role in Supacell, plays Tzain, Zélie’s brother; Amandla Stenberg portrays Princess Amari; Damson Idris takes on the role of Prince Inan; and Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as King Saran. With such a talented cast, viewers can expect thrilling performances, given their impressive filmographies. Other actors sharing the screen with them include Idris Elba, Regina King, Lashana Lynch, Cynthia Erivo, Viola Davis, Ayra Starr—marking her second feature film after her appearance in Jade Osiberu’s Christmas in Lagos—as well as Shamz Garuba, Pamilerin Ayodeji, Temi Fagbenle, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Kola Bodunde.

Beyond the anticipation for the film, critics have commented on the casting choices, expressing concerns about potential language barriers, cultural differences, and inconsistencies in the source material. While their concerns are valid—especially given the history of African representation in Hollywood—there is hope that the cast and creators of Children of Blood and Bone will deliver a compelling experience and that the adaptation will offer an authentic representation of Africa’s culture, identity, and languages.
