The one-year period enabled by the Adult Survivors Act, signed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul in May 2022, has concluded this month.

The "one-year lookback window" stipulated by the Adult Survivors Act began six months after its signing, and it applied irrespective of when the alleged abuse occurred. According to New York Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, during this period, courthouse doors were "flung open so you can confront your abusers and seek the justice that was too long denied you."

In recent months, lawsuits against NYC Mayor Eric Adams and other public figures have garnered attention. Here's a glimpse into Adams' case and other instances of legal action under the Adult Survivors Act involving notable figures:

In November, a settlement was reported following accusations of rape and abuse in a lawsuit filed by Cassie against Diddy. Diddy's lawyer, Ben Brafman, stated that the settlement "is in no way an admission of wrongdoing." Diddy has faced additional lawsuits from two other women, both accusing him of sexual assault.

Eric Adams

Adams is accused of sexually assaulting a City of New York employee in 1993, with the legal action seeking $5 million in relief. Adams denied the alleged assault, stating it "absolutely did not happen."

Bill Cosby

The convicted comedian faces accusations of assault, battery, false imprisonment, and more in a recent lawsuit from Joan Tarshis.

Mike Tyson

A woman alleged in a lawsuit in January that Tyson "violently raped" her in a limousine in the early '90s.

Jamie Foxx

A woman, identified as Jane Doe, accused Foxx of groping her at a rooftop lounge in New York in 2015. Foxx denied the allegations through a representative.

L.A. Reid

An ex-Arista Records exec alleged that Reid sexually assaulted her and retaliated against her when she declined his advances.

Cuba Gooding Jr

The Oscar-winning actor is accused of two separate incidents of alleged sexual misconduct in lawsuits filed in November.

During this one-year window, over 3,000 civil suits were filed, including cases against prisons and hospitals in New York, as per statistics cited by the New York Times.
