The nominations for this year’s Emmys were recently announced, with shows like Severance, The Studio, The Penguin, Hacks, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us leading the pack. In addition to the standout shows, several prominent Black actors made history with their nominations. American-Nigerian actress Ayo Edebiri earned two nods — one for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and another for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series — becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for both acting and directing in the comedy categories in the same year. She is also only the second Black woman ever nominated for comedy directing, following Millicent Shelton’s nomination for 30 Rock in 2009.
Abbott Elementary creator, executive producer, and actress Quinta Brunson continues her historic Emmy run. After becoming the first solo Black woman to win for comedy writing in 2022, and the second Black woman to win Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2023, she is once again nominated in both categories. This year, she’s competing for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
Notably, the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category is once again dominated by women of colour, with Brunson, Uzo Aduba (The Residence), and Ayo Edebiri among the top contenders. This marks the second consecutive year this milestone has been achieved.
Other Abbott Elementary cast members, including Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph, were nominated in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category. Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons), Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus), Tramell Tillman (Severance), Brian Tyree Henry (Dope Thief), Cynthia Erivo (Poker Face), Sterling K. Brown (Paradise), Zoë Kravitz (The Studio), Will Smith (Slow Horses), and RuPaul (RuPaul’s Drag Race)—who became the most nominated reality host in Emmys history—also received nominations across various categories.
In the music categories, artists like Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé received nominations for Outstanding Music Direction and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special (Live), respectively. The 77th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Nate Bargatze and broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS. The show will also be available to stream live and on demand via select Paramount+ packages.
