Singer and breakout star Asake has reportedly parted ways with YBNL, the record label that propelled him to fame. The rumors of their split gained traction on social media after fans noticed that Asake had removed "YBNL" from his Instagram bio and unfollowed Olamide, the label’s founder.

Asake’s bio now lists him as a “creative director,” sparking conversations across the internet. Interestingly, YBNL’s Instagram account still follows Asake, and he remains one of the six accounts the label follows. This nuanced dynamic suggests there may not be animosity between the artist and the label despite the changes.

Asake joined YBNL in 2022, making an explosive entry into the Nigerian music scene with his chart-topping single “Sungba.” His tenure with YBNL has been nothing short of remarkable, culminating in major achievements like selling out the O2 Arena twice. However, speculation about "bad blood" between Olamide and Asake has been buzzing, even though their split might simply reflect the natural evolution of an artist’s career.

Not every contract termination is rooted in conflict. In a music industry often plagued by tales of acrimonious exits and disputes, this departure might serve as an example of an amicable split. Artists can, and often do, move on from record labels to pursue independent paths or different opportunities.

In what could be a refreshing perspective, Olamide has reportedly expressed pride in Asake’s growth and decision to leave the label. Speaking on the matter, Olamide reportedly said, “I didn’t create YBNL because I wanted to make money. I created it because I wanted to see other young people grow. If any artist under me wants to leave, they are free. Asake has done his part, and I’m proud of him.”

Reports reveal that Asake has been granted the masters to all his songs recorded under YBNL, a rare and generous move in the music industry. While the label will maintain a royalty split on these songs for the duration of their original contract—a minimum of ten years, the gesture speaks volumes about the mutual respect between the two parties.

Asake’s departure was reportedly finalized a few months ago following the release of his album Lungu. Although Olamide extended an offer for a renewed contract, Asake ultimately declined, choosing instead to become an independent artist. Sources suggest that the decision was not without effort on Olamide’s part, as he made several attempts to renegotiate and retain the star on his label. However, the tipping point came two weeks ago when Asake decisively opted to chart his own course.

While the end of this chapter may feel bittersweet to fans, it’s also a testament to Asake’s ambition and readiness to take on new challenges.

Asake undoubtedly has immense talent and a solid fan base, he is well-positioned to continue dominating the music scene this time on his own terms. And as Olamide’s philosophy suggests, this could be just another step in the ongoing narrative of success and growth for both parties.
